My Dream Job Destroyed my dream: An unoriginal statement about education.
Published on Medium.com
"Five years ago, I got my first job as a teacher. My dream job. My dream school. I could not have been happier: life was good.
Then, five months ago, despite my passion and idealism, I broke down and accepted that my dream for an education focused on divergent thinking, individuality, and genuine learning was horribly unrealistic, hindered by bureaucratic disconnect and systemic devaluation. It became clear that the job which originally brought me so much excitement, wasn’t at all as I thought. In fact, genuine creation and effective collaboration would be forever secondary to administrative agendas, systemic mandates, and a tireless effort to maintain the status quo. Crestfallen and exhausted, I submitted a letter of resignation shortly after this heartbreaking realization.
And, five weeks ago, I walked out of my classroom for the last time, turned in my keys, and drove away. Indeed, I was scared for my future, but mostly heartbroken and utterly vexed, wondering where things went awry: how did my dream job destroy my dream?"
Relevance and Application: Developing a Curriculum for a World Literature Course
MAT Thesis Research Project
Published by Chapman University
ABSTRACT: "This study examines the nature of the relationship between curricular content and an affective connection to that content. It attempts to provide an example as to how educators can better structure their curricular frameworks so that they take into account the interests and lives of their students. This study is placed within the context of the increasing debate on the nature and purpose of English Language Arts curricula. The cognitive and affective domains from Benjamin Bloom’s educational objectives are crucial aspects to the curricular development discussed in this study. According to Bloom, there are great benefits to finding ways of connecting students with curricular content based on interest and application. Particularly, in light of the Common Core State Standards and other curricular reform initiatives, this study hopes to provide a foundation to educators seeking out a more relevant and applicable curriculum..."
A Story Worth Sharing: Noah
Created for World Literature courses at Woodbridge High School
This narrative essay was created as a mentor text (model) for World Literature students at Woodbridge High School.
"My brother is an alcoholic and an addict. At the age of fifteen, while other people his age were trying out for sports teams and getting their driver’s permits, Noah, my brother, was severely depressed and terribly alone. With the help of some people my brother considered friends, Noah quickly learned to find comfort at the bottom of a whiskey bottle. However, as anyone who has witnessed, first-hand, the effects of alcohol abuse can attest, the comfort Noah found with whiskey was temporary—a superficial and short-term bandage to a deep-seated psychological wound. The only thing alcohol did for Noah was exacerbate his suffering. The more he drank, the more rapidly his “comfort” transformed into spurts of numbness and blind anger. With every bottle, the more he fell apart, living out his high school years in a blur of alcohol-fueled rage and despair..."

"I have a problem with words that I cannot seem to overcome. It is not evident to me when, specifically, I realized it was an issue, but as far as I can remember, I have been suffering from the burden of backspace since I started typing so many years ago. While my friends were learning to process words like Mavis Beacon – hammering out record-breaking scores of 70+ words per minute (in fourth grade, 70wpm was a lot!) – I was stuck, hopelessly searching for the perfect words to begin my opening sentence. While neighborhood kids were out on the street playing, I was sweating and stressing over school projects that always took twice as long as they should because of my indecisiveness and inability to go with my gut..."
